# This and that

Parure en dominos

Musée du papier peint, Au Château, Route de l'Eglise 12, 1684 Mézières FR
Who knows the dominoté papers? The somewhat forgotten ancestors of wallpaper, with a name of uncertain origin, they had their moment of glory in the 18th and 19th centuries.
These charming hand-printed papers, measuring about 30 x 40 cm, covered countless books and documents of all kinds, giving them a personalized, colorful and joyful touch. Would they have inspired the English expression "Don't judge a book by its cover"? Dominoes served as an alternative to marbled paper and relatively expensive bindings such as parchment. They were also used to brighten up boxes, small pieces of furniture and walls.
This surprising and original exhibition brings together loans mainly from the Cantonal and University Library of Fribourg, the State Archives of Fribourg and the Archives of the City of Romont. They testify to the diversity of the motifs of the dominoté papers, as well as to the inventive genius of their creators, the dominotiers.
