Maria Magdalena Z'Graggen - Un affare di famiglia

Kunsthaus Grenchen, Bahnhofstrasse 53, 2540 Grenchen
In the exhibition in the extension building, Maria Magdalena Z'Graggen is showing paintings created especially for the exhibition as well as, for the first time, the "Zurli" - a series of sculptures.
Maria Magdalena Z'Graggen (*1958, lives and works in Basel) is one of the most consistent painters in Switzerland. In her work she explores the possibilities of color as a painting material as well as light and atmosphere with persistence, poetry and great sensitivity. By applying paint to a wide variety of picture supports as well as forming them into small sculptures, she emphasizes the archaic and artisanal nature of working with paint. The artist usually uses wooden panels as image carriers, which she primes with old-master precision and on which she lays a first layer of paint. The paint is then applied with a palette knife - a technique that forces the artist to concentrate on the act of painting. The result is paintings in which the representational and the abstract merge. The colors are form and content at the same time. The paintings do not refer to circumstances outside of themselves - because the painting itself is the event. With this approach to exploring the materiality and effect of color, Maria Magdalena Z'Graggen makes an important contribution to contemporary art in Switzerland.
