Labor M (Montaigne), held annually, is regarded as a dynamic tradition of local contemporary music.
Every year, the Ensemble Montaigne issues a call for submissions, inviting composers from all over Switzerland to write short pieces based on the season’s theme. For our current theme, “Games,” we’ve assembled a colorful bouquet of pieces that all have one thing in common: the concept of “playing” isn’t limited to producing sounds (on an instrument), but also encompasses the invention of sounds and musical structures. For once, you can be there live as the form of the piece being performed is determined by rolling dice (a great example here is Mozart with his “musical dice game”), when the musicians determine the piece’s structure on the spot through signals, or when the sonic framework of a piece is designed in such a way that the composer is distinctly perceived as a performer.

This year’s Labor M promises an hour of musical enjoyment of a very special kind: at once highly insightful and extremely entertaining. As Ibsen says, “There is surely nothing more intelligent one can do in this beautiful world than to play.”
