At night. Of bedrooms, stars and lanterns

Museum Appenzell, Hauptgasse 4, 9050 Appenzell
The exhibition approaches the theme of night from a cultural-historical perspective - with selected objects from the collection.
When it gets dark, we reach for the stars, pull a night shift or turn night into day. Or we sleep and possibly dream. In the past, rest periods were based on the position of the sun. Today, the boundary between day and night is blurred by artificial light. The night is a time for rest, work, pleasure and inspiration - or to put it soberly: the dark side of the earth.

The Museum Appenzell invites you to explore the night from a cultural-historical perspective - with selected objects from the collection. A special focus is placed on a room in which we spend a large part of the night and almost a third of our lives: the bedroom.

The night has long since ceased to belong to sleep alone. The development of numerous light sources has made it possible to use the night for work or pleasure. Tallow and oil lamps, lanterns and electric light bulbs tell the story of artificial lighting.

The nocturnal life of humans, animals and plants is also made visible in the exhibition.

With a view into the vastness of the starry sky, other artistic works approach the night - including works by Raoul Doré and Vera Marke.
