The Roman Museum in Avenches presents its new exhibition dedicated to the many trades whose tools were discovered during excavations
The Roman site at Avenches has revealed evidence of the many professions practised by the inhabitants of the capital of the Helvetii, ranging from the most senior administrative roles to agricultural work, as well as doctors, potters, firefighters and stonemasons.
In addition to inscriptions, which are invaluable for revealing individuals’ social status and occupation, the majority of professions are revealed by the presence of traces, tools or workshops, bearing witness to the work of anonymous people carrying out all the activities necessary for the functioning of a large Roman city.
