The First Homosexuals

The exhibition The First Homosexuals at Kunstmuseum Basel is dedicated to the early visibility of same-sex desire and gender diversity in art. With around one hundred paintings, photographs, works on paper and sculptures, it sheds light on how new images of sexuality, gender and identity emerged from 1869 - the year the term "homosexual" was first used - until after the Second World War. The multi-layered exhibition opens up a view of queer networks, intimate portraits, coded desire and courageous life plans.
