The advent exhibition, an initiative of the m.a.
This year's work is Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine and Saint Augustine, by an anonymous master, Workshop of Antonio Vivarini (1418-1484) Bartolomeo and Alvise, oil on panel, c. 1480, from a private collection in Canton Ticino.
The depiction of the Madonna and Child is an important and recurring iconographic theme in the history of Christian art: in the work on display, the Madonna and Child is flanked by Saint Catherine (on the left) and Saint Augustine (on the right). It is a cultured and highly evocative composition that holds great spiritual value for the Church.
The valuable work is now on display in the atrium of the m.a.x museo and can be admired free of charge until January 6, 2026.
