An architect, although better known as a painter, sculptor, designer, and graphic artist, Max Bill attended the Bauhaus from 1927 to 1929, and from this experience he drew the founding principles
Max Bill's artistic practice, theoretical thought, and teaching are all aspects of a single method, based on an innovative and integrated vision of the "universal artist." The exhibition at the max museo aims to emphasize the centrality of Max Bill's figure in the internationalization of European culture, with particular reference to the relations between Zurich and Milan.
The exhibition displays approximately sixty of his paintings, sculptures, graphics, and designs, arranged thematically and chronologically, always having as its underlying theme the strong relationship Max Bill maintained with Italy and the Canton of Ticino, particularly in the Zurich-Milan relationship. The loan of the collection of his son Jakob Bill and the "max+binia+jakob bill stiftung" in Adligenswil is crucial.
Significant works also come from Swiss museums and private collections, including the Lorenzelli Arte collection. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue in Italian and English, featuring full-color images of all the works on display, published by Silvana Editoriale (Cinisello Balsamo, Milan).
The exhibition has a spin-off with the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Università della Svizzera italiana, where a meeting between Jakob Bill and Mario Botta is planned.
