Special exhibition about the ibex and its importance for Lauterbrunnen.
On June 30, 1924, two male and three female ibex were released from the Harder Game Park on the Schwarzmönch near Duckbalm, above the hamlet of Sandbach. After several centuries, our heraldic animal was once again at home in our valley and the population of this alpine game animal has developed magnificently here ever since. Animals can already be released into other areas to build up populations, for example in the Stockhorn region in recent years. The curious and friendly "mountain goat" can also be encountered on hikes in the valley; one is then very impressed by the dignified and beautiful figure of the ibex, which moves majestically in the mountain landscape. The ibex is a symbol of strength, beauty and boldness; our ancestors were inspired by this intelligent and sociable animal.
We are dedicating a special exhibition to this historical event at the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Legend Museum during the 2025 season, and possibly also in 2026. In addition, the Mürren Mini Museum has also taken up the theme; under the title "The symbolic animal in the mountain habitat", various characteristics of the ibex and its habitat are presented in display windows.
Topics of the exhibition:
History of the reintroduction of the ibex in our valley since 1924
The ibex and its close relatives
The ibex, our heraldic animal
The ibex in mythology and in the world of legends
Conservation and care today; the activities of the gamekeeper
