The Regionale is an annual group exhibition developed in the context of cross-border cooperation between 18 institutions in the three-country region around Basel.
They cross borders, leave the familiar behind and set off for new lands, which become their home for a shorter or longer period of time. Artists also usually leave rigid thinking or opinions behind in order to set off into the future with moving, new thoughts and thus works, often despite all fears and doubts. Because a new beginning without the security of walls and structures can trigger uncertainty. That is why it is precisely artists who can show us how we can maintain an understanding of permeability and mobility. Ideas that can go through walls and provide new political, ecological, architectural and social impetus.
The invited artists live and work in the tri-national region, grew up in France, Germany or Switzerland as well as in Spain, Italy, South Africa, Peru, Egypt or South Korea and experience almost daily here in the border triangle how quickly borders can be crossed that are irrevocable, dangerous hurdles elsewhere. They allow sounds, light or heat to glide through rooms, turning walls and partitions into membranes that allow a glimpse behind them.
This is why the current edition - in the spirit of penetration - occupies the upper floor of the new Kunsthaus Baselland as well as the neighbouring TransBona Hall and the exhibition space of Atelier Mondial, with whom the Regionale was curated and realized. In their works and large installations, the 17 invited artists talk about political, ecological and social hurdles, but also about the possibilities of working, walking and thinking beyond them.
When thoughts are not held back by anything, they can gain momentum, move from one place to the next and change direction. When art can spread out, it can grow - across borders, spaces, ideas - and go through everything.
