Since 2024, Marianne Burki has curated the Kunstkästen Schaffhausen on the theme of "Nature." Barbara Signer's exhibition is now the last vernissage in this context.
In the fable Peach Blossom Spring by Tao Yuanming from the year 421 AD, a fisherman accidentally discovers a utopian paradise where people have been living an ideal life in harmony with nature for centuries, beyond war and oppression. Based on this story, Barbara Signer's work combines utopian ideas of nature, community and perception with elements of club culture. The title "Super Paradise" refers to a hedonistic club on Mykonos and becomes an ironic echo of a contemporary feeling in which longing, escapism and utopia flow into one another. During her residency at Sequerciani Arte Clima, the artist immersed herself in the world of bees, insects that see in the UV spectrum and communicate through dance. Barbara Signer thus creates a surprising parallel between the insect kingdom and club culture, between waggle dance and rave, between light and the invisible.
The works shown in the art cases are fragments of a large painting that Barbara Signer painted at Sequerciani. A reproduction of this can be seen in the Stemmler Museum. They have been reworked with fluorescent paints and dipped in UV light. This creates an interplay between the observation of nature and artificial light. It is an invitation to see paradise not as a place of longing, but to redefine existing structures of perception.
During opening hours (Thu 6 - 8 pm / Fri 4 - 6 pm / Sat + Sun 12 - 4 pm), UV flashlights can be borrowed for viewing at the Vebikus Kunsthalle ticket office (Baumgartenstrasse 19).

In her artistic work, Barbara Signer (*1982 in St. Gallen, lives in Zurich and St. Gallen) deals with the emergence of realities and captures them using various media. Mostly in the form of installations, she attempts to capture the incomprehensible and the uncertain with subtle humor and subtle observations. In her works, the imaginary and the real merge into a fiction in which we examine our perception of reality.
