15.01.2026 14:00 - 17:00
Bernapark Museum - Kunstraum Thomas Demarmels, Bernapark 23, 3066 Stettlen
Discover the world of brocade papers in the gallery of the Bernapark Museum, Kunstraum Thomas Demarmels from January 14 to April 10, 2026.

Papiers dorés based on new designs by Christian Beck, Marie-Ulrike Callenius, Béatrice Gysin, Heiko Hillig, Martin Kaufmann and Lucien Rod treffen on prints based on historical models.

Embossed printing processes (papiers dorés, brocade papers) reached their peak during the Baroque and Rococo periods. Today they are sought-after collector's items.
Michael Rothe has researched these fascinating and elaborate processes and revived their technique.

Through his work as a restorer, the luminous brocade papers came into his hands from time to time. The papers used as bindings, wallpaper or decorations for furniture or instruments were among the finest examples of applied printmaking in the Baroque and Rococo periods. Fascinated by their vibrancy and inspired by a scholarly study of an important private collection, the desire arose in him to further investigate their vibrancy and production methods, which had fallen into oblivion.

For around three years now, he has been producing his own brocade papers in his own studio, based on classic designs from its heyday, as well as limited editions in collaboration with various artists, which offer a (contemporary) reinterpretation of this printing technique and its expression of preciousness.

Visit our public vernissage on January 20, 2026, doors open at 5.30 pm/ 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm in the presence of the artists. Take the opportunity to talk to them in person. Music by Dina Kehl, viola di gamba.

The opening hours of the Bernapark Museum, Kunstraum Demarmels are Wednesday - Sunday, 14.00 - 17.00.
