The "red soldiers" are a legacy from the old mercenary era. For centuries, many people from the Lötschental have found their livelihood in foreign service. For example, in the year of the Battle of Lerida (1644) in Catalonia, six Lötschental soldiers died according to the death register. The white silk banner with a continuous red cross (Savoyard cross) and the year 1625, which is kept in the parish archives of Kippel, also refers to this mercenary period. The Lötschentalers were also active at the royal courts of Versailles and Naples. This is where the uniforms of the Lord's Grenadiers came from. When they returned home to the villages, they kept these parade uniforms and wore them again on high church festivals to the glory of God.
